Frank Merrick was born in Bristol in 1886. A marvellous pianist, he won the Rubinstein Prize at St Petersburg in 1910. The following year, he became professor of piano at RNCM until 1929 when he took a similar post at RCM. In 1956 he was professor of piano at Trinity College until his retirement in 1975. He learned Esperato while in prison as a conscientious objector in World War 1 and was a male suffragete. He composed much music including a symphony, two piano concertos, chamber music and songs.
